Winter is the time Midge Fly fishing for trout
Let's face it, we dream in Technicolor of size 10 green drake Hexagenia limbata panels or as large as the beavers – but the reality is time is time Midge winter. Often, the only insects icy waters are so small, most anglers challenge to consider LASIK. As you know, much of the energy is below the surface.
Then a kind of fly tying, fly joke I heard a local Pops famous called something along the lines of "my second best fly hardware provider Hobby Lobby is endearing." This, of course, assumes that Blue Heron Fly Shop where we sit is the "best first" This is also known for the phrase. "Worthwhile, if it is not chartreuse," but as say, is another story.
Armed with that nugget of wisdom, I have traveled all sections of the Hobby Lobby. Eureka! Placing a great son "Côtes" Nymphs, foam sheets to the wonderful land, the son of a range of varieties of 'bugs, and pearls, beads, beads! All this is available at a fraction the cost of their counterparts in fishing shop. Bingo!
In this beautiful wall-o'-Pearl, I found the most talented little metal in a small cylinder size pink. They came in a variety of colors such as olive, purple, copper and brown. Many have fancy names like Brown Metallic Iris accounts (which I did at home) and many others. Perfect. We're talking small. Just the right size to just tighten less barbed Hooks Size 20 and be proportionate.
Armed with this position to my fly tying, I started experimenting. If you have already picked up and looked at the small water insects, you will notice its appendices and the segments are no different, except under a microscope. So I combined a small head jewel with many materials, simple body try to find a simple solution to binding. I wanted to, is about to hatch recent trips to the stream. Finally got the goose biota dyed. I had originally intended to link the biota Prince nymphs in a much larger scale, and certainly a different application. My favorite color is olive Biot, and man, what a great body biota subtlety be segmented. In short, I designed ball Duff / Biot Midge – ideal for cold winter fishing waters. More than that arises, I developed a powerful combination one-two has proven time and again through many channels of leakage of Texas and Oklahoma.
Despite the small grains / Biot Midge is a murderer as a dropper nymph below a larger one-two is a drop below a hair-like research. Before I give you the recipe, let me describe the simplicity of these two flies. The dry fly is more olive and olive hackle Biot olive / gray in a size twenty Barb less hooks. Duff Dry Midge – Olive
Materials –
* Hook: Size 20 sec
* Subject: Olive 8 / 0
* Body: Goose Biot dyed olive
* Hackle: Olive / gray to match the size gap hook
* Head: Discussion olive
Technical – Crush Barb, put the hook on the leg press, the thread and the knot will sometimes the connection point of Biot, front coil wire wrap before leaving the segmentation of Biot and coupling with the half hitch, a simple feather tie, adjust the base, feather coat and tie, whip finish the head forming, add the cement.
Duff ball / Biot Midge – Olive
Materials –
* Hook: Size 20 Scud dry / nymph
* Subject: Olive 8 / 0
* Body: Goose Biot dyed olive
* Head: Brown Iris Ball
Technical – Crush Barb, capital accounts on the hook, put the leg press hook, line and the knot will sometimes stick to Biot point, facing wire wrap, Biot spiral before leaving segmentation and stowage half hitch (optional – tie a strand of crystal flash and closes like clip wing), the whip finish behind the Bead Head, adding the cement.
