WHAT KIND OF BAIT / PLATFORMS I can use for saltwater fishing?

I have a small boat I just bought. four meters five .. the distance I can take? and what types of fishing methods can be used to catch fish in the sea? all they have used is 4 oz weight attached to a lead of 3 feet with size 2 hooks with strips of squid .. I want to take a big sea bass … Nice … snapper. I fish about a mile from the pier next to the Cabrillo Beach lighthouse. All they seem to be small white croaker and baby wolf. . especially at night for lobster and crab ..
